Stromatolite Conophyton, and oncolites have been recorded from the calc-argillaceous Kapkot formation of the Calc Zone of Tejam, Kumaon Himalaya. The typical cone-in-cone type, belongs to the form Conophyton cylindricus, typical of Lower and Middle Riphean. The age of the Kapkot formation of the Calc Zone of Tejam, is fixed at Lower to Upper Riphean. It can be correlated with the Jammu limestone, the Semri Series (Vindhyans) and the Bijawars of Peninsular India, which are the only rockunits of India from which this form has been reported.
The other forms recorded here, are the oncolites, known from Siberia and Japan only. Inview of their rarity, the present report from the Precambrian of Himalayas is significant.
